Richard WEST ( - 1759) husbandman of Burpham  married Sarah PROCTOR (c1712 - 1781) of Findon at Findon, by licence, on the 15th April 1734.

Children of Richard and Sarah West:-
Mary baptised 24th February 1740 at Findon
William   baptised 1st January 1744 at Findon and married Mary PANNETT on the 2nd June 1773 at Angmering
Thomas baptised 30th January 1746 at Findon
Ann baptised 14th August 1748 Findon
Elizabeth baptised 22nd December 1752 at Findon

In 1773 William is described as 'of Clapham' and between 1781 - 1818 occupied Cootham farm, property of Mr Hooper
This is now known as Charity Farm.
In 1792 he was a churchwarden at Storrington and on 6th May and 5th August 1799 was paid for boarding the poor.
On the the 22nd April 1802 in a vestry meeting he was to serve as an overseer. 
William died on the 25th August 1819 age 75 and is buried just by the west door of Storrington church.  
His wife Mary died on the 30th June 1813 age 60 and is buried alongside him.

The children of William and Mary were:-
William  baptised 24th July 1774 at Burpham, maltster, married Sarah BROWNE and died 1840.
Mary   baptised 27th August 1775 at Clapham.
Thomas baptised 28th November 1779 Storrington and married Ann MITCHELL
Catherine   baptised 22nd December 1782 at Storrington, died 1782.
George  baptised 19th March 1784 at Storrington, married Elizabeth MARCH
Richard   baptised 3rd August 1785 at Storrington
Peter  baptised on 9th April 1787 at Storrington
James  baptised on 17th October 1790 at Storrington, Farmer at Clapham, married Mary WILMBER.
Henry  baptised 20th June 1794 at Storrington

Much of this information about Thomas West (1779 - 1833) has been gathered from
Storrington in Georgian and Victorian Times

by Joan Ham, privately published c.1989.

Thomas  (baptised 28th November 1779 at Storrington) married Ann MITCHELL on the 31st October 1810 at Storrington
In 1813 he is described as husbandman of  Cootham, but from 1815 - 1826 labourer.  
From 1822 to 1831 he is of Oldfield common in Storrington.
On the marriage of his son George in 1857, Thomas is described as a farm bailiff
Thomas was buried on 31st January 1833 at Storrington age 53 and Ann on 23rd January 1849 age 66 'from Littlehampton'.
The children of this marriage were:-
Mary  baptised 22nd September 1812, married Charles NEWMAN in 1834 and dead by 1899. 
Sarah  baptised 14th February 1813 and died 16th August 1899 James  baptised 12th February 1815 and buried 30th November 1839
Peter  baptised 25th October 1818 died 1819
Ann baptised 19th December 1819 buried 12th November 1897 Thomas   baptised 17th February 1822 buried 19th November 1897
George baptised 20th July 1824 died 3rd September 1904.  Married Ann KNIGHT (1829 - 1914).  
Eliza baptised 10 September 1826, buried 30th December 1904.


 

George and his wife, Ann, are buried in Littlehampton cemetery together with many of George's unmarried brothers and sisters.
They had all been living close to each other in  Littlehampton.

Reminiscenses of Littlehampton

George  (1824 - 1904) and Ann KNIGHT (1829 - 1914) were married at Washington on the 4th July 1857.
George West was born at Storrington on 20th July 1824.
In the 1841 census at Storrington common, George age 15, is described as a labourer but by the 1851 census he is a coachman  at the vicarage, Washington,  aged 27.
Ann's brother Edmund KNIGHT was a footman at the vicarage at this time.  
By the 1871 census of Washington, age 47, George is the undergardener at  Highden Lodge and he is still there in the 1881 and 1891 census.
1901 sees him in Littlehampton
He died on the 3rd September 1904 age 80, retired gardener, and is buried in Littlehampton cemetery.
The children of this marriage were:-
Mary Ann baptised 14th April 1858, died 25th November 1887, married George COOPER
Jane baptised 29th January 1862, also married George COOPER. Died 12th February 1924.
George baptised 26th March 1866, in 1891 gardener at Highden and in 1901, a greengrocer in Streatham, London.
